2017-2018 Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum

Sharing is caring!

It's hard to believe that my youngest is in kindergarten this year. We waited an extra year to start him because of his birthday and his sensory processing disorder, but it's finally here! I always love to share what homeschool curriculum we're using--partly as a record for myself, but also as information for others. You never know when someone might be looking for a curriculum and your review might be the thing that helps them. So, here is our 2017-2018 Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum Choices. I've shared our 2017-2018 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices in another post.

This year we're sticking with My Father's World Kindergarten curriculum. I used it in the past with my oldest and loved it so much then that we're using it again. It's a gentle introduction to school. Not too much, but just enough to keep the wonder in learning. It is a letter-of-the-week curriculum, but it's so much more! Along with each letter, children study a concept that ties into science. Along with the science tie-in, there is a Biblical truth connected with the concept. For example, "S" week is for Sun and the Biblical truth is that "Jesus is the light of the World". We'll observe grapes turning into raisins, study butterflies by observing caterpillars turn into butterflies, and ants making tunnels as just a few of our fun science activities.

I thought long and hard about whether I should use a letter-of-the-week curriculum with Asher because he knows all of his letters, sounds, and is beginning to read. I didn't want to hold him back. In the end, I decided to stick with My Father's World because I love the science and the Biblical truth tie-ins. The curriculum is a sweet and very rich time of exploring.

For reading instruction we will be using All About Reading Level 1. I have a feeling we might move through this level quickly because Asher is already reading some. And books! Lots and lots of books! Each week I'll be heading to the library and filling up our library bag with tons of books. We'll snuggle up on the couch and read, read, read. I'll be sharing a peek into my library bag with my book lists for kids.

All About Reading
For math we will be using Saxon Math 1st Grade. Asher is extremely gifted in math concepts and is well beyond the typical kindergarten math curriculum. He is already adding and subtracting. Last year he wanted to do some of his brother's addition/subtraction drill sheets and I gave them to him to appease him thinking he would just practice writing numbers on them. Little did I know that he would do them quickly and with accuracy...without math manipulatives or finger counting. The only kindergarten math concepts we will review is telling time to the hour and money during our morning calendar time.Want to see more homeschool curriculum picks?
