Mommy & Me: Fingerprint Art

I love thumbprint art. I also love teaching Jonah about God’s Word. Combine the two and you make this Mommy very happy.

The folks at Tommy Nelson went and made it even easier for me (and you!) to accomplish both at the same time!

Printoons are unique characters made with your fingerprints. Printoons are a fun way to use fingerprint art to teach your little ones Biblical stories and God’s Word. I first heard about Printoons while at The Relevant Conference, but have since seen them in my local Lifeway and online. I purchased all three Activity Packs as a present for Jonah while at Relevant. Even though Jonah isn’t quite ready for all of the activities yet for the Activity Pack’s recommended age of 5, we still had lots of fingerprint fun!

The activity Packs include everything you need to get started, including a rainbow colored ink pad and marker. There are step-by-step instructions and practice ideas for making Printoons characters for the coordinating Bible story. (So far there are only three available Bible Story packs–Nativity, David and Goliath, and Noah’s Ark) The Activity Packs include the Bible Story, mazes, games, etc. to use with your fingerprints. They are a lot of fun! We used the Nativity pack’s “Countdown to Christmas” during the month of December to help Jonah visualize how many days until Christmas. He loved it!

During our Printoons time, Jonah finally began drawing people…something he hadn’t tried to do before. It’s worked wonders with his confidence level and desire to draw. By only having to add the “features” to each fingerprint, it eliminated enough of the drawing steps for Jonah to feel comfortable creating.

Here is just one of the many pages we filled up with our Printoons

Doesn’t it look like fun?!?!

Now, fingerprint art isn’t anything new to me. I used to use it in my Kindergarten classroom when I was teaching. Thanks to Tommy Nelson, I’ve seen fingerprint art in a new way with an Eternal purpose!

Here are a few other Fingerprint Art Resources to help you get started (I even found a Princess & Dinosaur Printoons Activity Pack!):

The Kindness Of Friends

When I went to Relevant, I scrimped and saved to get there. Now,  I’m not usually much of a “girly-girl”, but I realized that I would be seeing my online friends in real-life for the first time. A sense of panic rose from somewhere deep inside and insecurity bubbled to the surface for various reasons. My mind transported me back to middle school when my insecurities were at their worst.

So I asked a friend from church with impeccable style if I could come play dress up in her closet and borrow a few things. I figured a few of her accessories paired with my basics would be good enough to get me through the weekend without having to buy a new wardrobe. But then a funny thing happened…she brought me a box.

Wrapped in paper and topped with a bow

I tried to refuse it–say it was “too much.” She knowingly smiled and extended her hand to give it to me anyway. When I opened the gift, I was immediately moved to tears. It was a perfect outfit for me–she even guessed my size correctly! I put it on and immediately stood taller, my insecurities melting away. She gave me exactly what I needed—encouragement and self confidence in a new place meeting new people.

How blessed I am by the kindness of friends!

Relevant friends

Meeting new friends at Relevant

I’m always amazed at this online community I’m a part of. People rallying–using a blog post, Facebook status, or tweet to spread the word. Until now, it’s always been about someone else in another state that I wouldn’t recognize on the street. But recently, I’ve found myself the recipient of some fabulous linky love from other bloggers helping to spread the word about our adoption fundraising….handing me a gift wrapped in paper and topped with a bow.

Here is a list of some kind online friends that have blessed us with a blog post:

Tara at Mommy Missions (met her at Relevant–you’ll hear more about her soon!)

Kelly at Domestic By Design (a college friend of mine that I reunited with online)

Jolanthe at Homeschool Creations (met her at Relevant–you’ll hear more soon!)

Marci at Overcoming Busy (met her at Relevant–she’s so sweet!)

Eryn at Mama Hall (met her at Relevant. God made our paths cross for a reason that is still playing out)

Debbie at Happy Clippings (PURCHASED from my shop and gave them away to her blog readers!!)

Crystal at Domestic But Not Martha (Sweet Twitter Friend–never met her, but could hug her for all of the extra tweets!)

Tracy at Sweet Harper (Never met her, but am so thankful for her kindness! We’re twitter friends now!)

How blessed I am by the kindness of friends!

**If I have left anyone out, PLEASE leave a comment and I’ll add your link to the list! We appreciate all of the help and want to link to you!**

My Relevant Recap

This past weekend I went to the Relevant Conference for Christian women bloggers. It was amazing and exactly what I needed on so many levels. God moved. He moved in my heart and in the hearts of women all around me. It’s hard to even find the words to express the flood of emotions and thoughts experienced (I’ve been trying to write this post for 4 days.) One thing I know for sure…I am not the same wife and mother that I was a few days ago.

It’s funny how a blog conference can end up having very little to do with blogging, but be everything you didn’t know you needed. While I wouldn’t say that I learned the answers to all of my technical questions, God used Relevant to shine His light into the dark spaces of my heart that were suffering from a serious case of  the dust bunnies. He pointed out the ugly pictures that had decorated the walls of my heart for so long and took them down, one by one.

The Need for Recognition

And for good measure, he painted a new coat of grace to brighten up the walls of my heart.

I know I’ll be processing all that I heard for a while. God is still speaking to me. He’s not done with me yet. I hope you’ll be here as I process and share the things that God has impressed upon my heart…I have a feeling some of it is for you, too.

Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from the sessions:

  • “If you don’t have time for God, you don’t have time to have a blog.” –Crystal Paine, Money Saving Mom
  • “It’s the living life, not writing about it, that will change the world.” –Sally Clarkson, I Take Joy
  • “You will never be wrong in loving and forgiving someone who will never love and forgive you back.” –Serena Woods, Grace Is For Sinners
  • “Our greatest triumphs are aloways our most solitary ones, the ones that He alone sees, the ones alone in His Presence, and every great victory begins on the knees.”–Ann Voskamp, A Holy Experience

Send me to Relevant 2010!

I’ve been listening to lots of big time bloggers buzz about blogging conferences lately. Connecting with other bloggers, learning more about social media, using your blog to help you with your Etsy business, figuring out how to grow my blog and reach more people…Sounds pretty great to me, but who am I kidding, I’m a small time blogger. I’d introduce myself and hear crickets accompanied with a blank stare.  “Bueller…Bueller…Anyone…” Seriously, why would I put myself through that?

Then I heard about the Relevant Conference and their mission statement spoke to the deepest part of me.
The Relevant Conference exists to offer a place of face to face interaction with Christian women bloggers who want to be relevant in the larger blog and social media world. Our goal is to go beyond the surface into intentional blogging and real life living. We support women turning their hearts toward home and using their blogs to bless their families while also engaging the world for the glory of God. Relevant is a one-of-a-kind conference that seeks to engage women by teaching blogging techniques and social media skill while also urging and encouraging women to live fully integrated lives with their faith and family.
They had me at “women turning their hearts toward home and using their blogs to bless their families while engaging the world for the glory of God.” Because that is exactly what I want for my blog and my life. My heart has already been turned toward home. I resigned from my job in the middle of a recession because of this calling and haven’t regretted it one bit. Using my blog to bless my family? Check. Engaging the world for the glory of God? Check. Check. Someone sign me up!

So now that I’m hooked and want to go comes the hard part…paying for the conference. That’s where you come in. You can help send me to Relevant 2010 by purchasing something from my Etsy Shop.
