Our Curriculum 2012-2013

I can’t count how many people have told me that I’ve got an advantage to choosing curriculum since I was a kindergarten teacher before coming home to be with the boys. I instantly cringe because while I DO have an advantage…it is also my downfall. Because I know what I’m looking for in curriculum, I’m instantly critical. Add a huge dose of paralyzing indecision, and well, you’ve got me…a huge mess…crying over curriculum like so many other first time homeschooling moms.

Oh, yes. I did have a few minor breakdowns in my quest for the “perfect curriculum.” And in my treasure hunt, I realized that there isn’t a perfect curriculum. Period. There are a lot of really good ones, but what works for one family won’t work for another.

Another thing that I had to be really honest with myself about is the amount of time that I have to prep materials and plan. With Asher not napping…EVER…and the mischief he makes, I just don’t have time to sit in the quiet and peruse my teacher planning books or Pinterest for fun ideas. While planning is definitely a fun part to teaching for me, now just isn’t the time to try to plan elaborate things on my own. So, I went with something that I can use as a base and supplement my fun ideas as time allows.

Units/Themes

We’re using My Father’s World from A to Z as our starting point. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure about it based on my first impressions of their website. (It seemed very “no-frills” compared to some of the big names in curriculum.) However, after looking at it in real life, I really, really liked it. I LOVE how Biblical principles are seamlessly woven throughout the themes. It provides a good starting point for our lessons, but still leaves enough room for me to supplement and add in fun ideas that I come up with. There are forums available on their website that provide a wealth of additional ideas.

The units in My Father’s World from A to Z have a mixture of all subject areas. They focus a great deal on science concepts and then built the theme around that, including reading, math, music, and geography.

Reading

I have an extensive children’s library built up from my years as a public school teacher and we will also be utilizing our local library to provide rich literature connections for each of our themes. We will be mixing fiction and nonfiction. Jonah enjoys learning facts about things and is often interested in doing some “research” on things we are studying.

book organization

One thing that I think My Father’s World needs to improve upon is introducing Sight Words. I will be relying heavily on things in my stash of teacher materials and things I find online for this area. I have collected “Easy Readers” through the years and we will be using these for reading practice.

Not to sound overly confident, but reading instruction is one of my strong points as a teacher, so I’m not too worried about this area.

Math

My Father’s World has some math included in the themes, but we are also using Math-U-See for daily skill instruction. We’ll be adding in things here and there as I see fit.

Science

We’ll be studying all sorts of things for each unit with My Father’s World. We’ll be doing hands-on science experiments. Making observations. Taking nature walks. Taking field trips to the Creative Discovery Museum, The Chattanooga Nature Center, TN Aquarium, Chattanooga Zoo, Knoxville Zoo,  a local apple orchard, and Mayfield Dairy….just to name a few. Oh, I can’t wait!

Bible

Each unit in My Father’s World has great biblical truths intertwined with the theme. We have also decided to add Grapevine Studies for more focused time in the Bible with specific stories to study. (Review to come!)

Music

My Father’s World comes with a CD of classical music (one song per unit). There is also an activity guide with activity suggestions for each song.

classical music

I have gone through the My Father’s World curriculum and matched the weekly Bible verses/themes with some of the songs in the Seeds Family Worship CD’s. We love their music because it is a catchy way to memorize scripture. We often find ourselves singing them over and over in our heads…talk about meditating on scripture!

We’re excited about what this year holds for us! We’ve already started and will be sharing our journey along the way!

Mommy & Me: Shape Building

I’ve got a post over at Totally Tots today sharing a fun and easy shape building activity. It’s a super simple one to make…like 2 seconds. Easy-peasy!

Jonah and I took some time while Asher was hanging with Daddy to build some shapes. (You can see the tutorial for setting up this activity in my Totally Tots post.)

I love watching him think.

This activity provided him plenty of opportunity for problem solving. It also provided him the chance to make choices for how to do something. There was an end goal, but he had to decide how to make it happen. While I provided initial support, I backed off rather quickly and let him decide how to make his shapes.

Once we made some of the basic shapes, I showed Jonah how to make some 3D shapes. He thought this was a fantastic idea and had fun exploring after the “formal” activity time was over.

We have added this activity to our “Busy Bags” set. It is a self-directed activity that doesn’t require my help and he can explore at his leisure. It is fantastic for those times when I’m nursing and I need Jonah to chill out a little so he won’t distract Asher.

Jonah Says… {Mother’s Day Card Edition}

Jonah came home with a Mother’s Day card from church yesterday. Besides the expected fun answers like my age (1 years old) or my desired occupation when I grow up (Ballet Dancer), these sort of questionnaires can be so revealing. For example, Jonah’s answer to the second question “My favorite thing to do with my mom is….” brought tears to my eye and gave me the pat on the back that I need some days.

His answer: “work in my homeschool room”

mother's day questionaireYou’d better believe I’m framing it!

Wow. I knew that he liked learning and the things that I plan for our Mommy & Me time, but really? His favorite thing?!

I think the proof is in the pudding.

And I’m so glad…I think it is one of my greatest joys as a mother to teach my boys and watch them learn. Out of all the students I’ve had through the years, my boys are my favorite. While we’ve only been doing preschool things so far, we’ve seen a glimpse of the glorious life that homeschooling can be for our family and found that it works for us. Apparently, it’s working for Jonah, too. :)

I’m so glad I walked out of that classroom four years ago.

Teach Them Diligently Convention: A Recap

Last weekend I strapped Asher in his carseat and drove with some friends to the Teach Them Diligently Convention. Only, it wasn’t that easy, because homeboy hates his carseat like nobody’s business. So a quick drive over the mountain in between nursing sessions took much, much longer than it should have, but that’s besides the point.

This was my first homeschool conference to attend. I had no idea what to expect, but I was with good friends and I knew, if anything, I would have a great time with the girls…plus Asher. Lucky for me, Teach Them Diligently was fantastic. It really set the bar high for all future homeschool conferences I attend. The speakers were fantastic. The vendor hall was filled to the brim and then some (seriously, there was an overflow room!) For being a first year event, I was super impressed with the smoothness of things. It was a well-oiled machine!

I had the chance to sit in some fabulous sessions. God used some of them to pierce my heart and reveal things in my heart that needed to be left at the feet of Jesus. Other sessions filled me up and gave me the confidence to follow our convictions about homeschooling, even if we’re in the minority. I couldn’t get to all the sessions I wanted to go to because there were just too many on my list! Some I had to step out of early due to my adorable little sidekick.

I got to connect with other homeschool moms that I know from social media. How fun is that?!?! Some of the meet-ups were planned, but one in particular was completely orchestrated by God and probably the most encouraging for me. I met Jacque from The Grain Loft, a real-life reader of The MOB Society, and fellow adoptive mom. My heart was so encouraged by our meeting. Their adoption story is similar to ours (well, the beginning at least) and it was a pleasure to talk to her and her husband. It was kinda weird to have someone recognize my writing, but kinda cool at the same time.

I also got to meet Melanie Young from Raising Real Men and a fellow MOB Society writer. Listening to Melanie and her husband, Hal, during their Raising Real Men session was fabulous. I have long admired them and what they have to say about raising boys (they are practically experts with 6 boys and 2 girls). Their session, named after their book Raising Real Men: Surviving, Teaching and Appreciating Boys, was a treasure trove of wisdom for parents of boys.

I got a chance to thumb through curriculum in the vendor hall. Picking curriculum is by far the most daunting thing to me right now about homeschooling and getting to look at things up close and personal was helpful. Although, at the same time, my indecision is getting the best of me still as I look over catalogs repeatedly. As a public school teacher, I never had the chance to choose curriculum…I don’t know what to do with this new found freedom! Although, I think I have narrowed it down to a few. We’re still praying over the decision.

One of the vendors that I met that blessed my heart was Kristi from Samuel L. Collins and the Search For Biblical Truths. She sent me home with a DVD for Jonah to watch & review and an encouraged heart. God used her speaking session to point my heart in the right direction when it comes to planning activities for Jonah. While the ABC’s and 123’s are important, I tend to get tunnel-vision when it comes to that sort of thing and forget that it isn’t all up to me. One of the things that I wrote down from this session in my notes was

“Where is God going to work when you have it all figured out already?”

Ouch. I’m so guilty of this. I think I have to have a plan and be in control, when really, God is already at work. Oh, this session was so good!

I know I’ll have lots more to say about Teach Them Diligently as I read over my notes and listen to the sessions that I missed. (My friends and I went in together to purchase them!) If they have it again next year, we’ll be going again for sure!
