Love Notes Journal

Love Notes Journal | Happy Brown House

When I was a little girl, my mom and I had a journal that we used to write notes back and forth. It was used during a difficult time for me as a child when I didn’t know how to express things that I was feeling about my parent’s divorce. The comfort of writing it all out was so much easier for me than actually having the conversation. (Hmm…some things never change)  Although the journal came about during a specific time and need, we ended up using the journal for years as I entered puberty, dating, and the difficult years of “finding myself.” I began thinking that I would like to do something similar for my husband and I to exchange “Love Notes”.  A place to encourage one another and leave notes for each other…you know, the mushy love stuff.  Enter the “Love Notes Journal”…

I took a plain composition notebook (the black & white marbled kind), some Valentine scrapbook paper, and some Mod Podge to decorate my “Love Notes” Journal. I wrote a gushy love note and tied it up with a bow! So simple, and bound to be a keepsake when we’re old!

How to Make Lollipop Valentines

I am SO excited about Jonah’s valentines this year! I’ve seen this idea all over blogland, so I can’t claim any crafting genius. I’ve joined the ranks of craft copycats with this one…but they are OH SO CUTE!! What? Don’t believe me? Take a look at this and tell me it doesn’t make your heart melt….

It was so easy to make and so much better than some cartoon character boxed set….Not that there is anything wrong with boxed sets if that’s what you used at your house! I had this idea in my head from last year and was determined to make them this year for Jonah’s Valentine Party.

These were a hit with everyone he gave them to, and I thought I would share how I made them. There are tons of tutorials out there, but here’s my version…

How to Make 3-D Lollipop Valentines:

1) Take a picture with your child’s arm extended into a fist. We’re going for a 3-D look so take several pictures! I tried several angles until I got the just the right photo (see below)

2) Upload the picture to Picmonkey, a free photo-editing program that is quick and easy to use. (I have a photo-editing program on my computer, but it takes a little time to navigate…I literally spent 5 minutes on these!) 3) Edit the photo in Picmonkey. I added words and a border around the edge…that got cut-off by the one-hour photo man. Here’s what my edit looked like (below)

4) Upload to your favorite place for one-hour photo. Order your prints & pick them up an hour later!

5) Cut a slit above and below the fist. Weave a lollipop through the holes.

6)  Voila!

Homemade Playdough Recipe & Printable

This is my favorite Homemade Playdough Recipe to go with the Preschool Playdough Mats & Activities shared earlier this week. Unlike some store-bought brands, it is smooth and stays moist for a long time if stored properly! Plus, you probably already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen cabinets. Enjoy!

Homemade Playdough

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 Cup Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Cream of Tartar (found in the spices section)
  • 1/4 teaspoons Food Coloring

Heat about 3 minutes on High. Stir continuously. After it gets thick and forms into a ball, pour onto some wax paper. Let the dough cool slightly. Knead until smooth. Store in a plastic bag, inside an air-tight container.

*If you want to add a little sparkle to playdough time, add a little glitter during the cooking process–Instant “Princess Playdough”

And because I love you…

Playdough is so much more than just squishy-gooey fun for little fingers. Playing with playdough is beneficial to developing and strengthening fine motor skills. Essentially, playing with playdough can directly impact your little one’s writing skills! (I know, I know, it can be messy. With a few guidelines, you can let your little one squish playdough to their heart’s content.)

Playdough Guidelines At Our House:

  1. Always at the table!
  2. Use a placemat
  3. If you purposefully throw it on the floor, we put your playdough away.

I have found that little ones don’t really have the dexterity to sculpt playdough into complex shapes and can get frustrated. One of the things they can do really well though is make “snakes” and roll a “ball”. Using these two things, we can harness the educational power of playdough through playdough mats!

ABC Playdough Mats

Playdough Mat Ideas:

  • Letter Outlines (Here’s a great printable from Homeschool Creations!)
  • Number Outlines (Another printable from Homeschool Creations)
  • Shape Outlines
  • Child’s Name
  • Counting Sets
  • Simple addition or subtraction facts (also known as “Number Sentences” in Kindergarten)
  • Spelling Words

Cutting Playdough with a Plastic Knife

Other Playdough Activities We Like:

  • Cookie Cutters of all kinds
  • Practicing cutting with a plastic knife
  • Practicing cutting with child-safe scissors (with lots of supervision!)

Here is a little trick to help extend the life of  your Playdough Mats: Slide the playdough mat into a plastic page protector. This will prevent the playdough from sticking to your playdough mat paper and will make it easy to wipe clean. Also, did you know that you can write on page protectors with a dry-erase marker and wipe it clean? Aha! Now our playdough mats are multi-purpose!

That should be a great starting point for you with making playdough time a powerful learning tool!

Mommy & Me Monday: Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Ever since I painted the bathroom this summer, Jonah has been asking to paint. For some reason, I had been avoiding it with him. Weird. Yes. Especially since I taught in a paint-friendly kindergarten. I finally decided it was time to quit avoiding paint and make our own Sidewalk Chalk Paint! It’s very easy to make basically corn starch, water, and food coloring. The kids were fascinated with mixing the ingredients and loved getting to help. Three great thing about the Sidewalk Chalk Paint is that it is non-toxic, cheap, and washable! The Sidewalk Chalk Paint kept Jonah and Little Miss A busy for longer than most activities.
Want to make your own Sidewalk Chalk Paint?
Mix well equal parts Corn Starch and Water (I did a few tablespoons of each, but needed more water in the end so the kids could spread the paint easily)
Add a drop of food coloring
Voila!
Cost: Super Cheap!
Corn Starch- I can’t remember how much I paid. You only need a few tablespoons.
Food Coloring: $1 at the Dollar Tree around Easter
Happy Painting!

My Standard Wedding Gift

Over the weekend I went to a wedding shower for Jake & Maggie. I took a gift that is becoming a standard around here….a monogrammed market tote filled to the brim with free cleaning supplies from my couponing adventures.

While it wasn’t exactly on their gift registry, I think it’s pretty useful. I’m wondering 3 things:

  1. Is it ok to give things that aren’t on the couple’s gift registry? (Especially if they have really expensive taste?)
  2. Is it considered tacky or smart to give things I get for free with coupons? (They don’t have to know I got it for free, right?)
  3. If it is considered tacky, does the adorable monogrammed market tote cancel out the tackiness? (I’m really hoping you say it does.)

Feel free to share your thoughts!

Cute Crab Applique Ribbon Ruffle Shirts x 3

I had a custom order this week that was absolutely adorable! (I know I say that about every order, but seriously, this one is my favorite to date.) The set of cousins will look adorable at the beach when they go eat crab!

Doesn’t it make you want to head to the beach and soak up some sun? I love how little Sophia’s onsie looks like a skirt! No need to put any shorts on that little one if they don’t want to!
