Where’s the first place a woman turns for heartfelt inspiration and guidance on her career, beauty tips, health, emothional support and any other concerns? Another woman, of course! And, there’s a reason for that…
Women are compassionate listeners, knowing intuitively when to dispense advice, when to laugh your cares away or when to merely offer a shoulder to cry on, and Gigi Garner, daughter of actor James Garner, has captured these intimate moments and compiled them into one book for women of the world to share: Girl Talk. (excerpt taken from the back cover of the book)
When I first received Girl Talk from Five Star Publications to review for MamaBuzz, I had high hopes that I would enjoy the thoughts shared from other women. I’ll be honest, Girl Talk wasn’t what I expected based on reading the back cover of the book. I had wanted more…something deeper. Girl Talk is the type of book that you would have on a coffee table, nightstand, or in the bathroom. The “stories” are short, quick reads. If you are someone that likes to immerse yourself in a book, then it may not pique your interests. On the other hand, if you are someone that doesn’t have time to immerse yourself in a book, this may fit your needs. You might feel the accomplishment of reading something, without committing to a novel.
Girl Talk covers the spectrum of topics: friends, careers, clothes, beauty, health, home, kitchen, mommies, pets, and travel. Women from all walks of life provided the author, Gigi Garner (daughter of James Garner), their thoughts on the topics. Some of the thoughts shared are funny, others are practical tips, like how to cut an onion without tearing up, laundry tips, or a special recipe. The practical tips are the ones I enjoyed the most.
Some of the advice thoughts shared in Girl Talk I wasn’t crazy about because they weren’t from a Christian perspective, which is where I seek my advice. This is more of a personal thing for me, but Girl Talk never boasted to be a Christian book. One other thing that bothered me about the book was the cover picture (I really feel like a “prude” by saying this!) The picture featured an undressed woman. Nothing was showing, but I found this completely unnecessary. Jonah is still young enough that he doesn’t have access to my books (nor pay attention), but if he were older I definitely would not want this sitting out or face-up.
So there you have it…my thoughts on Girl Talk.
Disclaimer: I was provided this book from the author/publisher for free in exchange for a review in partnership with MamaBuzz.
