Play Kitchen DIY Project (Part 1)

by Sara on March 15, 2010

I stopped by my first yard sale of the season last week and found a treasure! I have been on the lookout for a small cabinet or side table that would be perfect to turn into a play kitchen. My inspiration for the project is Jane from Out of the Crayon Box. She has revamped several cabinets into play kitchens and sold them on Craigslist. The money she made from the sale was donated to her church’s homeless ministry. The life of my play kitchen is still to be determined at this point, but I’ll definitely keep you posted!

Here is a picture of the “Before” status of the cabinet:

Usually I’m a “jump-right-in-before-making-a-plan-and-see-where-it-leads” type of DIY girl, but I needed to consult Ray on a couple of ideas and see which plan of attack he thought would work best.

Since Jonah was taking a nap, we got right to work on prepping for the transformation. First, we removed the doors and hardware. Then we added a board to divide the cabinet for the “oven”.

At this point, we realized we needed to get something from the hardware store before we continued. Off to Lowes we went….

**It’s rained every day since starting, so this is how the little kitchen-to-be sits in our garage. Stay tuned for the next progress update!
