Hello there…any chance you remember me?
Let’s see…since we last spoke (you know I consider these posts conversations, right?) we’ve had some excitement around the Happy Brown House. Ok, so excitement probably isn’t the correct term, but it has been, shall we say…“eventful“ around our house.
For me, pregnancy brings nausea–not just the “throw-up-and-move-on-with-my-day” kind of nausea, either. Oh no, mine is like Morning Sickness on Steroids. You know, the “let-me-just-lay-on-the-floor-by-the-toilet-because-it-will-happen-again-in-30-seconds” kind of nausea.
The kind where you can’t
- Eat
- Drink
- Think about Food
- Smell Food
- Maintain Weight
- Stay Hydrated
To put it nicely–It’s awful! The extreme nausea has a technical term–Hyperemesis Gravidarum–and isn’t often talked about. As a matter of fact, I hadn’t heard of it until my first pregnancy with Jonah.
Basically, I wasn’t able to keep anything down, including water, for days. This led to dehydration and a hospitalization for me to receive IV fluids. Since I have a past history with Hyperemesis, my Dr. chose an aggressive way to get the nausea under control….and I’m sporting a new accessory! It’s oh so chic… {insert sarcasm here}
I’m on a Zofran pump (kinda like an insulin pump, but with nausea medicine for me). I have to poke myself with a special needle that is attached to a catheter. Then I hook it up to a syringe of my medicine that is inside a pump. I receive a constant drip of medicine, which will hopefully do the trick and relieve the nausea. I’m still getting used to having it in and working with home health to tweak the dosage. My fingers are crossed that this will be enough. If not, there are other measures that are pretty scary for me–like PICC Lines and home IV’s. I’m hoping that the nausea will subside soon and I can start focusing on something other than repeating the “Don’t throw up” mantra. I’m so ready to get back to my family and my life…but 9 months is a long time. If history repeats itself, I’ll have this almost the entire pregnancy. A girl can hope though, right? ![]()
So, there you have it. I know…it’s riveting. I’d much rather be posting about a cute craft tutorial or fun thing Jonah and I did together during our Mommy & Me time, but this is my reality today…
Popsicles
Sprite
and Needles, Oh my!
In other news, my first two posts have gone up at Totally Tots! So, there…you CAN read something fun from me!

I was SO sick with it, and yours sounds tons worse than mine was. I thought I would rather just die-not literally but you know what I mean. Yours sounds so much worse, I am so sorry. Good thing it’s all worth it in the end. That was the ONLY thing that got me through. I am praying for you, I pray the Zofran pump works.
It’s pretty yucky! It IS worth it in the end! I keep reminding myself of that. Thanks for the prayers Carisa!
Oh, I’m so sorry. I had hyper-emesis with my three pregnancies as well. Luckily for me, it always ended around week 13. I couldn’t bear to poke myself with the needles, so my husband helped me change the needle every couple of days. The zofran worked better for me than any other thing we ever tried, but it didn’t make mine completely go away. Good luck!
Thank you Laura! It is pretty yucky isn’t it? How long were you on the pump? And by the way, your blog is just lovely! I love the alligator plush doll with the zipper!
Thanks, Sara! I’ve been enjoying reading your thoughts on adoption.
I tried the zofran pill first (it worked great for two days, then it didn’t anymore), so I didn’t start the zofran pump until about the 7th week. I stayed on it until the 12th week, and found it worked best when I combined it with half a Phenergen every 3 hours (instead of 1 every six). I also took Pepcid Complete to help reduce the acid on my stomach. This last pregnancy was the first time I was really treated for the hyperemesis, and I think all of these things really made a difference. I was really grateful for my attentive doctor. My mom stayed with us for 3 weeks, then my husband took 2 weeks off work, then I spent one week with my in-laws.
Thanks for the link above, too. It’s full of helpful information. I’m definitely going to be better prepared next time.
Wow! You went through a lot! So glad you had a support system to help. We don’t live by many family members so I’m grateful for my hubby working from home.
Congratulations of the pregnacy! I’m so happy for you and I hope the nausea passes soon. And – it sounds like the Happy Brown House is going to be HAPPIER! With a new baby and the child you’re adopting, you’re going to go through quite a few exciting changes! I can’t wait to hear about them!
And – I’ve been out of the loop. In case you haven’t seen my blog I got a new grand baby last Sunday. She’s precious and we’re thrilled!
Congratulations on the grandbaby Patty! I’ll have to head over to your blog and look at pics! I’ve been pretty out of the loop right now too
Awww, friend! I’m so glad for the update, but sad for you that you’ve been SO sick! I hope that w/ the pump you’ll see a big improvement! Praying for you!!
Thank you friend! It will be worth it in the end!
I will be praying that it doesn’t last the whole pregnancy and for God to give you the strength and hydration your body needs!
Thank you Lindsay! It’s so comforting knowing that others are lifting up prayers for me, too!
praying for you girl!!!
Thanks! Prayers are always appreciated!
Ohhhhh noooooo! I feel for you! I had hypermesis with my second one that lasted right up until she was born. It was almost strange getting used to NOT throwing up every day!
I did the little gingery drinks from Babies R Us (Oh Mama, or something to that effect), and had the Preggie Pop Drops EVERY DAY. The Zofran definitely helped (though I was fortunate enough to take the pills….yeesh I’m sorry!) and I wore the motion sickness bands on my wrists.
And yep, did the hospital IV thing (twice) to rehydrate…..will pray that this one won’t be so bad for you!
What if you made a gatorade slushie and ate the “ice” chips from it? Hang in there!
Thanks Steph! It definitely stinks doesn’t it? Thank you for the prayers! The Zofran Pump seems to be helping some.
